Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about SACNASP registration and services.

Any person who practices in one or more of the fields of practice of natural science as defined in the Natural Scientific Professions Act is required to register with SACNASP. This includes professionals working in environmental science, biological sciences, chemical sciences, geological sciences, and more.
Applicants must hold a recognised Honours degree (or equivalent) in natural science, have at least 3 years of relevant post-qualification experience, and demonstrate competence for independent practice in their field.
The registration process typically takes 4-8 weeks from submission of a complete application. Incomplete applications will delay the process. Applications are reviewed by a panel of registered professionals.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is mandatory for all registered professionals. You are required to accumulate a minimum number of CPD points per cycle. Points are earned through activities such as courses, conferences, publications, and mentoring.
Annual registration renewal is done through the self-service portal. You will receive a notification when your renewal is due. You must be CPD-compliant and have paid your annual fees to renew.
Late renewals incur a penalty fee. If registration is not renewed within the prescribed period, your registration may be suspended, and you will not be authorised to practice as a registered natural scientist.
Complaints can be lodged through the SACNASP website or by writing to the Registrar. All complaints are investigated in accordance with the Act and SACNASP's complaint handling procedures.
Yes, you can apply for an upgrade once you meet the requirements for the higher category. For example, a Candidate scientist can apply for Professional registration after gaining the required experience.
